Modest, elegant with impeccable finishing touches for family activity and beyond.

A continuation of the stair remodel project, this kitchen hadn't been touched since the 1950s. My clients were very aware of the need to maintain the character of the mid-century home, but also wanted the kitchen to feel modern. Glass accents in the tile backsplash and custom light fixutres were used to bring in color. Cherry cabinetry bring in the warmth often considered a hallmark of 1950s homes. Modern convenience, such as the dishwasher and refigerator, were hidden behind cabinet panels so as to not overwhelm the space. The microwave is hidden inside the pantry allowing it to be kept out of sight when not in use.

In the eating end of the kitchen, a raised glass table hangs off the end of the cabinetry. This is a perfect spot for family meals or guest gatherings when entertaining. The expanse of cherry cabinetry is offset by sections of darker cabinets delineating special use areas.

With careful attention to the details, this kitchen is transformed from a dated kitchen into a kitchen with clean lines, distinctly modern details, yet free of the hard, cold surfaces often found in modern design. The resulting design is marked by an abundance of natural materials and colors, with touches of glass and metal to complete the modern aesthetic.
