About Jason Ball and Jason Ball Interiors

I get asked often how I became interested in interior design. The simplest answer is I've always had some level of interest in the importance of feeling comfortable in the space around you. As a kid, I can remember rearranging my room and putting up new "art" (read "posters"). My room was in a state of constant flux - there was always room for improvement or change.

I was working as a market researcher in 1999, when my wife, Julie, and I bought a 91 year-old home in NE Portland. A previous owner had tried unsuccessfully to modernize the home, but in the process removed the character and replaced it with thin baseboards, gray carpet and white walls, rendering the home not very interesting or comfortable. We decided to restore/remodel the house in 2001. We brought back some of the period feel of 1908 like wood floors, custom woodwork and period light fixtures, but modernized it as well. I fell in love with the restoration and remodel process. In 2004, I was laid off and decided to devote all my time to my new interior design business.

This was the birth of Jason Ball Interiors. Since starting my business, I have been devoted to learning the interior design craft, serving my clients and growing my business. Now with several newspaper and magazine articles, and winning a Best Kitchen Design and a semi-finalist award for Best Use of Color through the Interior Design Society (IDS), I'm on the path to becoming a great interior designer.

In working with a broad range of clients, I've come to believe that we all want to be surrounded by a space that reflects our personality. You may not know the specifics of what you're looking for, but through an extensive "discovery" phase, we'll learn together the design aesthetics that most appeal to you. There may be a piece of artwork or some knick knack that you are especially drawn to. Maybe your mother passed down a decorative plate or piece of china that holds a special place in your heart. All we need is one item or clue to begin the design process.

On the home page of this website I have a phrase I read recently in a book by Suzanne Trocme - "Good design is movement that has come to rest." This phrase guides me in my design business. I am a firm believer in working diligently and continuously throughout the design process to find the perfect balance between color, materials, flow, personal aesthetic. Once balance is achieved, the design is complete.

As you peruse the rest of my website and view my portfolio, you'll learn more about my approach to interior design and how I conduct my business. I have surrounded myself with a small, close knit group of remodeling and design professionals. This team approach ensures I can meet the complete range of needs required by most design projects.

Thank you for considering Jason Ball Interiors and I look forward to being your interior designer.
